The Promenade Cinema Signs New Lease

Main Street Theaters, the parent company of The Promenade Cinema in Sioux City announces that it has recently signed a new multi-year lease for the current location of the Promenade Cinema in Sioux City.  The new lease, signed in September, will continue for the next 15 years and will afford the opportunity for The Promenade Cinema to continue to provide the highest quality movie viewing experience for the people of Siouxland at its current location in Downtown Sioux City.

Recent issues regarding a conflict between California based Civic Partners, owners of the 4th Street Retail Complex where Main Street Theaters leases space, First National Bank of Sioux City and the City of Sioux City has caused a significant amount of confusion for Sioux City customers.

Bill Barstow, President of Main Street Theaters confirmed, “We would like to state unequivocally that the Promenade Cinema 14 has a valid long term lease in the 4th Street Retail Complex and assurances have been provided from all parties involved that whatever the resolution of the dispute between those entities the lease will be honored in its entirety.”

First National Bank of Sioux City is the mortgage holder on the property.  “Whatever may be the resolution of the issues between the bank and Civic Partners it will not affect the theatre’s lease status.” Added Ron Adams, speaking for First National Bank of Sioux City.

The Promenade Cinema 14 has been a driving force in bringing a significant number of customers into the 4th Street Historic District each and every year since its opening in November of 2004.  Barstow acknowledged, “The Promenade Cinema draws well in excess of 300,000 visitors each year and passed the 1.5 million mark earlier this year.  Industry statistics show that the theatre also commands a dominating market share of 65-70% each and every week.”

Barstow added, “In addition to providing the Siouxland area with the finest in customer amenities including stadium seating, expanded concession selections, Digital projection with Dolby 3D technology and a host of others, Main Street Theatres and the Promenade Cinema 14 also takes seriously its role as a community asset.”

Selling the Sioux City Metro-See How its Done

Many people take for granted that as a community, it is important to have someone out there “selling”  the Sioux City Metro area. There is no one better to do just that than Chris McGowan, VP of The Siouxland Initiative (economic development arm of the chamber).

“Chris McGowan gave a great speech, about the successes of Siouxland Initiative, at the annual MAEDC (Mid America Economic Development Council) Competitive Conference in Chicago, Illinois last week.  As a member of the MAEDC board, it made me very proud to live in Siouxland and be associated with the Siouxland Initiative.  Keep up the good work, Chris!” -Brad Howard, Economic Development Consultant,MidAmerican Energy

Most of the time recruiting businesses and negotiations are kept highly confidential. Here is a sneak peak at what Chris does and how the Initiative has managed to be successful.

SD=#1 in Nation for Small Business and Entrepreneurship

As a part of Siouxland, we’re glad to hear that South Dakota has been chosen as the best place in the country for small business and entrepreneurship. The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBEC) today released its 14th annual rankings of the states according to their public policy climates titled “Small Business Survival Index 2009: Ranking the Policy Environment for Entrepreneurship Across the Nation.”

The ‘Small Business Survival Index’ helps business owners and investors understand the public policy burdens placed on entrepreneurship and small business, with the states ranked accordingly.”
SBEC chief economist Raymond J. Keating author of the study commented, “Policy matters. Most politicians talk a good game when it comes to small business, but their actions don’t often match their rhetoric. The ‘Small Business Survival Index’ gets at the public policy costs and trends that affect – directly or indirectly – entrepreneurship and small businesses. These measures should matter to everyone because small businesses, of course, drive innovation, economic growth and job creation. If we want to get our economy back on a solid, robust growth track, then we need pro-entrepreneur policies at the federal, state and local levels.”

The “Small Business Survival Index” is the most comprehensive measure of which states are truly friendly to small business, and which are not in terms of public policy decisions. The factors included in the Index – taxes, various regulatory costs, government spending, property rights, health care and energy costs, and much more –matter a great deal to the competitiveness of each state and to the well being of small business.

The Siouxland Initiative, the economic development arm of the Chamber, is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship in the Tri-State region and is are currently working on several projects that will help in this effort. They have recently began making plans to facilitate entrepreneurship in the food processing industry by developing a program where resources for these types of new ventures can be gathered in a single entity. The Initiative is also developing an Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, which provides resources to highly qualified individuals to help them start new companies with an eye on commercializing technology being developed at universities.

More Jobs, Quality Workforce and Preparing for the Future

To accomplish big tasks it is important to come together– as a business, as a community and as a chamber of commerce. In Iowa, we are fortunate to have a group focus specifically on improving the business

Members of the Iowa Chamber Alliance presented their 2010 Legislative Agenda and key initiatives to stimulate economic growth at a news conference on December 2, 2009, at the State Capitol. Tis the Season..for Celebrating Business

back alley christmas

Originally uploaded by Darwin Bell

As the Holidays draw near, we take a moment to reflect back on the past year. Many businesses have had some struggles in 2009 and hopefully have started or will start to pick up as time begins to heal financial wounds.

The Chamber has also seen positive growth in 2009 with businesses expanding and new development the area. Just this week we have three business celebrations planned.

Studio 427 will hold a Ribbon Cutting and Open House to celebrate the recent expansion of their current facility downtown. Also holding a Ribbon Cutting is Casselman Apartments. These apartments have recently been renovated and are move-in ready! On Friday, we will hold another Ribbon Cutting and Open House for Natalia’s Bakery and Restaurant. The owners are new investors of the Siouxland Chamber and are excited to showcase their new business to the community. Don’t forget, these events are open to all chamber members and their guests and are a great way to network as a business.

Show a Little Love to Local Business

Part of the Chamber’s job is to support our local businesses. Here is a program that lets you as customers, clients and friends support our local businesses in Siouxland. They even have a chance to win a $1,000 small business grant.

This content from: Duct Tape Marketing

Intuit, makers of Quickbooks, wants to know about a local business you love. And that business can even be your business. Cash grants every month too.

I think their Love a Local Business promotion is very fun. All you do is go to the program site and nominate a local business and tell them why you love it. Once a month they pick five local businesses to win a $1,000 grant and let the community vote on one of the five to get $5,000 for the month.

You can also nominate your own business for consideration. The site has a pretty cool Google maps integration that allows you to find all the businesses in your town that have been nominated. They also have badges and banners you can run on your site to show off

Oh, and there’s a nice December bonus, every business that applies for a grant in December will receive a free $50 Facebook Ad Credit.
