We have been getting calls about whether or not there are restaurants in Siouxland open on Christmas day.  Found only one – Bev’s on the River is open December 25 from 10am to 4pm for their buffet.    Many of our restaurants are either closing early on December 24 or not open at all.  Please call ahead for hours of operation.

A Handwritten Thank You

Although I constantly preach social media, I don’t think any electronic thank you will ever be as touching as a homemade personally written thank you card. The thought and personal touch make a big impact that transcends generations.

The note states:
Beth-
Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me this afternoon. I will call you next week so we can get signed up.
Thanks again,
Sarah

Thank YOU Sarah for the sweet note. Just made my Friday:-).

A Tech Community: Does Sioux City Metro have one?

Pile of Business Cards

A pile of business cards collected in the last two months from technology based local companies.

Over the last several days, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the question if a tech community does exist in Siouxland as more and more people seem to be bring up the “tech boom” in Des Moines and the Midwest. My job at the Chamber is to meet with business, new and existing so if anyone should know the answer I should…right?

My answer is yes, I believe we do have a tech community in Sioux City however one that is not connected to each other. There is a core group of former Gateway entrepreneurs who are very connected to the greater community and have established their own businesses, very successfully.

But there are also young entrepreneurs that have online businesses, social  sites and other innovative web based platforms that need help taking their ideas to the next level.

Now enter the Chamber of Commerce. One of the things we are best at  is bringing people together. It’s our hope that we can match these start up companies with resources they may need and bring like minded people together.

Do you have a start up you need help with? Or maybe just want to talk technology? Call or email me here at the Chamber btrejo@siouxlandchamber.com. I’d love to hear what ideas are out there.

Flood Recovery Meeting for Residents and Contractors

From the start of the Flood Fight the Siouxland Chamber has made it a part of our job to keep the general public and our business community up-to-date with relevant and accurate information. We hope to continue this effort by partnering with Iowa State University Extension as well as the City of Sioux City to bring you two free seminars from a  leading expert in flood cleanup.

Nationally known flood recovery expert, Dr. Ken Hellevang of North Dakota State University’s Extension Disaster Education Network will cover the hazards associated with flood restoration and clean-up, as well as recommended personal protective equipment; water damage restoration and accepted mold removal standards and procedures; specific guidelines for appliances, HVAC, electrical, and different types of construction materials and components; appropriate biocides and other chemicals; and the process for the critical drying of the structure. Ample time will be provided for questions and answers.

These two meetings will be held at the Sioux City Convention Center

  • August 29, 2011 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM for homeowners and businesses and on
  • August 30, 2011 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM for contractors.

Flood restoration and clean-up are the major topics that will be discussed by Dr. Hellevang.  “Think of cleaning your home after a flood as a marathon,” Dr. Hellevang advises. “Flood recovery is a long process, and it can have a huge impact on many parts of your life, including your health, emotions and finances. Because cleaning a flooded home is such an enormous undertaking, don’t make hasty decisions.”

Dr. Hellevang is an Engineering Specialist and Professor in the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering Department at North Dakota State University.  He is a nationally known specialist in flood preparation and recovery including mold and moisture problems and has provided educational and technical assistance to several flooded Midwest regions including Eastern Iowa and North Dakota.  “This likely is a new experience for you, and you need to do the cleanup correctly,” he stresses.

The seminars will cover how to protect yourself from hazards associated with cleaning a flooded home, the recommended process including what can be salvaged and what needs to be discarded, recommended procedure for cleaning and sanitizing, and proper drying procedures. Proper mold removal and steps to minimize mold growth will also be covered.

This meeting is FREE to the public. Flood related publications and Extension staff will be available to answer questions.

Chamber President Comments on USPS Closing Mail Processing

Siouxland Chamber of Commerce President, Chris McGowan’s comments on the United States Postal Service(USPS) decision to close the Sioux City Mail Processing Facility.

As we have stated all along, the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, supports the USPS’s pursuit of greater efficiency.  That said, how continuing to haul South Sioux City’s daily mail some 80 miles to Norfolk and North Sioux City’s mail some 90 miles to Sioux Falls, rather than processing  their mail right here in Sioux City completely escapes me.  This proposal represented a far superior consolidation opportunity, not to mention it would have preserved our mail processing facility and the local jobs associated with it, but the USPS refused to even consider this option.  Additionally, the unprecedented lack of transparency with which the USPS conducted this process, can’t help but call into question the basis for their conclusions.
