Postcards to wounded Veterans honor Sept.11

The Siouxland Volunteer Center, a program of Center For Siouxland is partnering with the US Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment, the US Army Recruiters and Buffalo Wild Wings to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Sept. 11th.   As a part of the activities the Buffalo Wild Wings will be donating 10% of all pre-taxed food sales from customers with tickets on Wed. September 7th to the Siouxland Volunteer Center.  Tickets for this can be obtained by calling the Siouxland Volunteer Center at 224-1001.  On Friday, September 9th, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. in the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot the public is asked to stop by the tent to write a postcard that will mailed to a wounded Veteran at a military hospital.  In attendance to greet those completing postcards will be a purple heart recipient, along with Marine Corps and Army Recruiter officials.  The goal is to have 1,000 postcards mailed.  The public will also have the opportunity to register with the Siouxland Volunteer Center and learn about disaster and non-disaster volunteer opportunities in our community.

The Siouxland Volunteer Center is a new program of Center For Siouxland and was initiated in March of 2011.  Since that time the Center has partnered with 3,500 volunteers who have provided the community with 7,000 hours of service.  The Siouxland Volunteer Center connects people with opportunities to serve, acts as a resource and coordination center for volunteers and works with spontaneous volunteers during times of disaster.

Best Tires (3) in the Nation!

I would like to make a congratulatory post, in-regards, to the people at Tires, Tires, Tires of Sioux City. Recently, Tires, Tires, Tires was honored with the 2010, Top-Shop Continental Award for the best tire dealer in North America. They received their award at the industry’s annual convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada last week.

Dan and Dale Nothdurft, chamber members, own stores in Sioux City and Sioux Falls area, and feel “honored and humbled” by the recognition. To go along with their silly radio-ads and always festively dressed tire-man, the crew has kept a good level of customer service to go along with proper car care.

Along with being great businessmen; Tires, Tires, Tires has always given back to their (our) community with charitable events, such as the recent care-packages being sent overseas for the Support Siouxland Soldiers, and always supporting a pink ribbon in October. They live not to just sell tires, but to promote safety and ensure satisfaction amongst the consumer spread.

Tire Review Magazine recently did a 10-page spread on the company, and kind of breaks down some of the business motives and ideas that have launched them into nationwide recognition. Take a look e-zine here!

With such acknowledgment from a national standpoint, let me be one, to speak on the behalf of Siouxland and say Congratulations to Dan and Dale for this prestigious award and thank you for all you do in our community! Keep up the terrific work!

“Nature Calls” Event Sure To Be A Thirst-Quencher

Fall season is starting to creep in. But that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. What is it you like to do in autumn? Is fall the time of year when you get artistic, or go to admire art? Go shopping? Maybe you like to get together with your friend enjoy a cold drink. Or perhaps you just like to relax and watch the leaves change.

Well if you thought any of the above sound like fun, Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is hosting an event that will suit you well. The annual “Nature Calls” fundraiser is bragging a casual atmosphere with a bunch of relaxing and fun activities.

“This event is casual and tons of fun. We have people looking forward to it every year because of the relaxed atmosphere and unique combination of artists, beers and auction items,” said Dawn Snyder, Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center Programs Director. “It is our seventh year for this fundraiser and the Stoney Creek Inn venue gives an added boost to the event.” added Snyder. “The facility has beautiful atmosphere and its nature theme is a ‘natural’ for Nature Calls.”

The event will be Saturday, September 25th at the Stoney Creek Inn’s River Bend Conference Center in Sioux City beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Past “Nature Calls” fundraisers have funded the Nature Center’s work to continue to expand their exhibits and galleries. The Phase II exhibits will begin creation in fall and are planning to be installed in March of 2011. Dawn Synder and the staff of the Nature Center are very excited about some of the new exhibit additions, including an egg collection and a very rare mount of an extinct Passenger Pigeon.

This exciting new dimension in exhibits would not be possible if it weren’t for the broad support of so many groups and individuals. The casual evening includes nature art, beer tasting and a silent and live auction.

A highlight of the event is the Live Auction. This year includes a trip to a vacation home in Ely, Minnesota; fine jewelry; original artwork; beer novelties and many more wonderful items.

Advance tickets for “Nature Calls” are $35 and are on sale now by contacting the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center at 712-258-0838. Tickets after Noon on September 24th are $40 each. Proceeds from the event go to special educational programs and new exhibit enhancements at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center.

For more information on “Nature Calls” contact Dawn Snyder at 712-258-0838 or dsnyder@sioux-city.org. A complete listing of auction items, artists and beers featured at the event will be listed at www.woodburyparks.com after September 1st.

Alorica in North Sioux Achieves the Power of Service

Who’s got the Power?

North Sioux City Alorica was honored earlier this year as the “Top Site – 1st Half 2010” during the Q1 Power of Service Awards at Alorica – what an honor!

This is a big accomplishment, and from one of our own Chamber Members.

Alorica’s internal recognition program “Power of Service Award” recognizes performers in Alorica’s operations and support organizations who are delivering the best overall results. These results (and the criteria for this award) are based on customer satisfaction, agent satisfaction,  and financial results.

This award is a great testimony to the quality employees we have in the Siouxland area.  Keep up the great work!

Reflections: What it Means to be a Community Health Center

Today’s post is brought to you by our guest blogger Cara Conrad, courtesy of the Siouxland Community Health Center.

National Health Center WeekPerhaps there is no greater time to reflect on what it means to be a community health center than National Health Center Week (August 8-14). This year, health centers celebrate 45 years of providing quality health care to the communities they serve, especially the underserved and those most impacted by access barriers. So in recognition of this year’s theme for National Health Center Week, “Turning the Vision into Reality,” Siouxland Community Health Center (SCHC) looks on at its own vision, and how living its mission everyday has transformed these directional statements into a compassionate and motivated reality. The Vision: Siouxland Community Health Center is recognized as the first place patients and community partners identify and utilize as the resource for quality care. The health center is known as the premier leader in providing comprehensive health care services, as the employer of choice, and as a steward of resources entrusted to us.

These days, if one was to ask you describe Siouxland Community Health Center, a common reference may be that “it’s that big new building on 10th and Nebraska Street.” The new facility was a vision itself which came to life upon completion in January 2009. But what’s beyond the structure and through the doors is where the vision really becomes a reality. The new structure was indeed a milestone that allowed the health center to expand to meet the long term demands of growth and health care needs for the community. Through the doors is where compassionate and patient-centered health care is accessible to all and barriers are eliminated. From primary medical or dental care, pharmacy, behavioral health services, comprehensive care for HIV/AIDS, or language interpretation available in four languages, SCHC has opened its new home with pride to be able to serve the community in the best capacity possible. This has included building a strong and dedicated workforce of over 170 staff- a trend that is consistent with overall organizational growth. How does a community health center become an employer of choice? It’s a reward that goes beyond any face value. It is having the opportunity everyday to make an impact in someone’s life. To make it better. Healthier. And to offer hope to those facing challenge or despair. In March 2010, outreach staff at SCHC had the opportunity to meet with workers at John Morrell just weeks before plant closure. Through a series of informational meetings, staff offered information about programs and services available to them to ensure that even during significant challenge and change, health care access didn’t have to be a worry or critical choice. Through that experience, it became evident what the work of health centers are all about.

As health centers expand and Siouxland Community Health Center continues to demonstrate growth, being a steward of resources is critical. For 18 years, SCHC has built a strong community presence and partnership with many other organizations throughout Siouxland. Some of these accomplishments have included piloting a school-based heath center, bringing health care to the homeless, or women in recovery while caring for their children. To continue achievements such as these and grow programs and services within its new home, SCHC is excited for opportunities to come. On August 21st, SCHC will host a 5K Run and Fun Walk at Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City to celebrate the work of health centers and serving all walks of life. The health center also looks forward to its first major fundraiser event in October, a progressive dinner themed “A Night on the Town,” an event that promises health center friends an enjoyable evening and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of another- a child, the homeless, a friend or neighbor.

In summary, as one may reflect on what it means to be a community health center, or more specifically what it means to be a community health center in Siouxland, I hope that this reader may find a greater understanding of what is beyond the fresh bricks and infrastructure. It is a continuous effort to turn a vision into a reality. It is stewardship in bridging gaps to quality health care. It is a commitment to partnership in building a healthier community.
