After almost two years working on this project I’m proud to say that we now not only have more bike racks in Siouxland, but we have racks that look nice too.

I’m also proud to say that we were able to do this working with the city and private donors without using taxpayers dollars. We thank Scheels for their support. As well as SIMPCO and the Siouxland Trails Assc. for their collaboration with the Chamber’s Community Enhancement Committee.

Look for more to be installed in the spring-a variety of shapes colors and sizes!

Sioux City Declares YP Day

Flood Recovery Meeting for Residents and Contractors

From the start of the Flood Fight the Siouxland Chamber has made it a part of our job to keep the general public and our business community up-to-date with relevant and accurate information. We hope to continue this effort by partnering with Iowa State University Extension as well as the City of Sioux City to bring you two free seminars from a  leading expert in flood cleanup.

Nationally known flood recovery expert, Dr. Ken Hellevang of North Dakota State University’s Extension Disaster Education Network will cover the hazards associated with flood restoration and clean-up, as well as recommended personal protective equipment; water damage restoration and accepted mold removal standards and procedures; specific guidelines for appliances, HVAC, electrical, and different types of construction materials and components; appropriate biocides and other chemicals; and the process for the critical drying of the structure. Ample time will be provided for questions and answers.

These two meetings will be held at the Sioux City Convention Center

  • August 29, 2011 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM for homeowners and businesses and on
  • August 30, 2011 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM for contractors.

Flood restoration and clean-up are the major topics that will be discussed by Dr. Hellevang.  “Think of cleaning your home after a flood as a marathon,” Dr. Hellevang advises. “Flood recovery is a long process, and it can have a huge impact on many parts of your life, including your health, emotions and finances. Because cleaning a flooded home is such an enormous undertaking, don’t make hasty decisions.”

Dr. Hellevang is an Engineering Specialist and Professor in the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering Department at North Dakota State University.  He is a nationally known specialist in flood preparation and recovery including mold and moisture problems and has provided educational and technical assistance to several flooded Midwest regions including Eastern Iowa and North Dakota.  “This likely is a new experience for you, and you need to do the cleanup correctly,” he stresses.

The seminars will cover how to protect yourself from hazards associated with cleaning a flooded home, the recommended process including what can be salvaged and what needs to be discarded, recommended procedure for cleaning and sanitizing, and proper drying procedures. Proper mold removal and steps to minimize mold growth will also be covered.

This meeting is FREE to the public. Flood related publications and Extension staff will be available to answer questions.

For information or questions call the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce at 712-255-7903 or the Woodbury County Extension Office at 712-276-2157 or visit the Iowa State University Extension Flood Resources Site at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/topic/recovering-disasters

Best Tires (3) in the Nation!

I would like to make a congratulatory post, in-regards, to the people at Tires, Tires, Tires of Sioux City. Recently, Tires, Tires, Tires was honored with the 2010, Top-Shop Continental Award for the best tire dealer in North America. They received their award at the industry’s annual convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada last week.

Dan and Dale Nothdurft, chamber members, own stores in Sioux City and Sioux Falls area, and feel “honored and humbled” by the recognition. To go along with their silly radio-ads and always festively dressed tire-man, the crew has kept a good level of customer service to go along with proper car care.

Along with being great businessmen; Tires, Tires, Tires has always given back to their (our) community with charitable events, such as the recent care-packages being sent overseas for the Support Siouxland Soldiers, and always supporting a pink ribbon in October. They live not to just sell tires, but to promote safety and ensure satisfaction amongst the consumer spread.

Tire Review Magazine recently did a 10-page spread on the company, and kind of breaks down some of the business motives and ideas that have launched them into nationwide recognition. Take a look e-zine here!

With such acknowledgment from a national standpoint, let me be one, to speak on the behalf of Siouxland and say Congratulations to Dan and Dale for this prestigious award and thank you for all you do in our community! Keep up the terrific work!

“A Million Spokes” – Be The First To See It!

Haven’t you always wanted to attend the premier first-time showing of a film? Wouldn’t it be awesome to attend something Hollywood-esque right here in the Midwest?

Well, now is your chance! Coming to Sioux City right before the opening of RAGBRAI 2010 is the special first-time screen viewing of an epic feature-length documentary – “A Million Spokes”.

Shot in July of 2009, “A Million Spokes” was filmed during the largest and oldest bicycle touring event in the world.  An annual bicycle ride, RAGBRAI, takes place in Iowa over seven days in July where thousands of bicyclists descend on the state to partake in an adventure that is singular in its ability to attract some of the most unique people you will ever encounter.  Prepare to explore Iowa first-hand with the riders of RAGBRAI as we join them and meet the characters that we follow in “A Million Spokes.”

The film’s director, Varda Hardy, producers, Ken Gorrell and Talia Rodriguez-Shakur, will join many of the characters we meet in the film to screen the project in its first public viewing.  As if meeting the film director wasn’t enough, there will also be a number of surprise guests in attendance – including A-list celebrities, film executives and film critics!

This viewing is a fantastic opportunity to meet the film’s director, producers, and many characters from “A Million Spokes” (not to mention the chance to meet the surprise guests!).

This first-time viewing of “A Million Spokes” will be taking place at the Riviera 4 Theatre in Sioux City, IA on July 23rd, 2010 at 5:00pm. The cost to attend this special screening is $25.00. Also, because of all of the special guests going to be in attendance, tickets are limited. If this premier event is for you, be sure to get your tickets right away! Tickets are available online or at the Riviera 4 Theater (714 4th St • Sioux City, IA 51101).

Besides being among the first to see the film and meet the director, your $25 ticket will also score you a free Medium bag of popcorn, a free Medium drink, and entry into a Raffle!

If the viewing on the 23rd doesn’t work into your schedule but you’re still up for seeing “A Million Spokes” then fear not! For the director of the film is providing additional screenings that will be open to the public on July 23rd and 24th, 2010.

Also, there’s a couple of interesting sponsorship opportunities at this event for businesses that want to get noticed. If you’re interested, these opportunities provide everything a business could want: from Company name and brands on all media and at the opening of the screening to VIP Movie passes. There are several packages available to tailor to your business’s needs. Just call Eric Hilsabeck (712-898-8484) or Susan Gorrell (319-795-8487) to get more information on how you can get your company noticed at the feature film event!

Hope you get a chance to see what RAGBRAI is like from the view of some of last year’s unique and very special participants!

Sioux City Police Department is Now “Facebook Official”

During my time here at the Chamber, I have learned a lot about the utilization of social media.  These outlets are evolving beyond their original intentions and are now an important network for communication.  It has even grown beyond a business tool.  More and more public service organizations are also using social media to take their message to people instead of making people come to them.

One of these organizations is the Sioux City Police Department.  Their Facebook page went up on April 15th and within two days had over 1600 page views.  In their first week they already had over 700 people fan their page, and that number is growing daily.  On the page, you can find Crimestoppers alerts, pictures of events that the SCPD has been involved with, and even interact with the department by voicing your questions and concerns directly to them.  One fan asked about a rumor circulating that the department had something to do with a pit bull being shot.  Because of the convenience of the Facebook page, the department was able to dispel any rumors about this incident.  I also strongly encourage local businesses to become fans.  Through the Facebook page they will be able to communicate with the department about their concerns as business owners and operators, and also gain useful information about safety.

You can become a fan by either logging on to your Facebook page and searching for City of Sioux City Police Department, or by clicking the following link:

“Oh What a Night!”:Girls Inc. Presents Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

Over the years Girls Inc. has brought many big name musical stars to perform at the Orpheum to benefit their programs.  These acts have included Tony Bennet, the Beach Boys, Wayne Newton, and Grammy Award winner Amy Grant.  This year “grease” is the word because on May 19th Girls Inc. will proudly presents an evening with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at our beautiful Orpheum Theatre.

One of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ biggest hits was Big Girls Don’t Cry.  This mirrors the purpose behind Girls Inc. and how they prepare girls and young women for a bright and shining future.  Girls Inc. strives to help girls realize their true potential through programs such as Operation Smart, which encourages girls’ interest in science, math, and relevant technology.  Other programs include tutoring, health education, self-reliance and life skills, sports and adventure, and they have also implemented a girls’ bill of rights, which includes such mottos as: “girls have the right to be themselves and resist gender stereotypes” and “girls have the right to prepare for interesting work and economic independence.”

Girls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. With roots dating to 1864, Girls Inc has provided vital educational programs to millions of American girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Tickets for the benefit start at $47.50.  A limited number of tickets are still available!  It would be a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.  Reserve your seats at the Tyson Events Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.  For more information, call the Tyson Events Center Box Office at 712-279-4850, or check out www.orpheumlive.com.
