Community Strong, Community Proud

One word to describe the support regarding the Chamber sponsored rally for BPI held on Saturday. Amazing. We’ve always known here at the Siouxland Chamber that we have a strong community that pulls together in times of celebration and when challenges arise. We had over 15k people show their support by attending the community rally in demonstrating that beef is beef and that Lean Beef Trimmings are safe and nutritious to eat. We are fortunate to live in such a great tri-state community! Image

Community Rallies to Support BPI and their Employees

Governor Branstad and Congressman King Make Plans to Attend Picnic

SIOUXLAND: Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota – In response to the overwhelming outpouring of support from throughout the tri-state community, the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce announced today that they will be sponsoring a community picnic as a means of demonstrating support for BPI.

Iowa Governor, Terry Branstad, and Iowa’s Fifth District United States Congressman, Steve King, have confirmed that they plan to attend the event to demonstrate their support for the company and the beef industry in general, as well as the food processing and agricultural economies.

The picnic event will take place this Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM in the parking lot of the Tyson Events Center located at the intersection of Pierce Street and Gordon Drive in downtown Sioux City, Iowa

Local business leaders have collectively expressed their support for the company and their product, Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB), after BPI became the victim of an internet and media campaign to undermine the company’s product.

Chamber President Chris McGowan said, “The Siouxland community has a long history of coming together during difficult times and you can be assured that the challenges BPI is facing today represent another opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to one another, this company, and our regional community.”

The weather forecast calls for unseasonably warm weather on this last Saturday of March and the entire Siouxland community is invited to attend the event.

The picnic will be free and open to the public.  Hamburgers (that include Lean Finely Textured Beef), chips, and beverages, will be served.

Coalition of governors joins forces to support U.S. beef industry: Beef Plant Tour Tomorrow

(DES MOINES) – A coalition of governors is joining forces to support the U.S. beef industry and set the record straight about lean finely textured beef, releasing a statement and conducting a Beef Plant Tour.

Lean finely textured beef is a 100% beef, 95% lean, nutritious, safe, quality and affordable beef product eaten by Americans for 20 years. The production and food safety technologies employed to make lean finely textured beef are USDA-approved, and it is produced in USDA-inspected meat processing facilities.

Govs. Terry Branstad (Iowa); Sam Brownback (Kansas); Lt. Gov. Matt Michels, standing in for South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who is on a trade mission in China; Dave Heineman (Nebraska); and Rick Perry (Texas) today jointly issued the following statement:

“Our states proudly produce food for the country and the world – and we do so with the highest commitment toward product safety.  Lean, finely textured beef is a safe, nutritious product that is backed by sound science.  It is unfortunate when inaccurate information causes an unnecessary panic among consumers.

“By taking this safe product out of the market, grocery retailers and consumers are allowing media sensationalism to trump sound science. This is a disservice to the beef industry, hundreds of workers who make their livings producing this safe product and consumers as a whole.

“Ultimately, it will be the consumer who pays for taking this safe product out of the market. The price of ground beef will rise as ranchers work to raise as many as 1.5 million more head of cattle to replace safe beef no longer consumed because of the baseless media scare.

“We urge grocery retailers, consumers and members of the media to seek the facts behind lean finely textured beef. Science supports keeping the lean beef product on grocery store shelves for the benefit of American agriculture and consumers alike.”

Already, more than 650 workers in Kansas, Texas and Iowa have been temporarily laid off. According to the National Meat Association, as many as 3,000 American jobs will be affected when suppliers are also factored in.

A coalition of governors and state leaders will conduct a Beef Plant Tour at BPI in South Sioux City, Neb. facility, Thursday, March 29. A full list of participants will be available tomorrow.

Four members of the media will accompany the governors on their Beef Plant Tour and pool their coverage. For broadcast, CNN will be the pool and will provide onsite HD playback of plant video after the press conference. Details for print media will be available onsite.

A news conference at the Marina Inn Conference Center (385 East 4th St., South Sioux City, NE 68776) will follow the tour for all interested media and will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.

I’m also proud to say that we were able to do this working with the city and private donors without using taxpayers dollars. We thank Scheels for their support. As well as SIMPCO and the Siouxland Trails Assc. for their collaboration with the Chamber’s Community Enhancement Committee.

Look for more to be installed in the spring-a variety of shapes colors and sizes!

Ample time will be provided for questions and answers.

Flood restoration and clean-up are the major topics that will be discussed by Dr. Hellevang.  “Think of cleaning your home after a flood as a marathon,” Dr. Hellevang advises. “Flood recovery is a long process, and it can have a huge impact on many parts of your life, including your health, emotions and finances. Because cleaning a flooded home is such an enormous undertaking, don’t make hasty decisions.”

Dr. Hellevang is an Engineering Specialist and Professor in the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering Department at North Dakota State University.  He is a nationally known specialist in flood preparation and recovery including mold and moisture problems and has provided educational and technical assistance to several flooded Midwest regions including Eastern Iowa and North Dakota.  “This likely is a new experience for you, and you need to do the cleanup correctly,” he stresses.

Best Tires (3) in the Nation!

I would like to make a congratulatory post, in-regards, to the people at Tires, Tires, Tires of Sioux City. Recently, Tires, Tires, Tires was honored with the 2010, Top-Shop Continental Award for the best tire dealer in North America. They received their award at the industry’s annual convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada last week.

Dan and Dale Nothdurft, chamber members, own stores in Sioux City and Sioux Falls area, and feel “honored and humbled” by the recognition. To go along with their silly radio-ads and always festively dressed tire-man, the crew has kept a good level of customer service to go along with proper car care.

Along with being great businessmen; Tires, Tires, Tires has always given back to their (our) community with charitable events, such as the recent care-packages being sent overseas for the Support Siouxland Soldiers, and always supporting a pink ribbon in October. They live not to just sell tires, but to promote safety and ensure satisfaction amongst the consumer spread.

Tire Review Magazine recently did a 10-page spread on the company, and kind of breaks down some of the business motives and ideas that have launched them into nationwide recognition. Take a look e-zine here!

With such acknowledgment from a national standpoint, let me be one, to speak on the behalf of Siouxland and say Congratulations to Dan and Dale for this prestigious award and thank you for all you do in our community! Keep up the terrific work!

Well, now is your chance! Coming to Sioux City right before the opening of RAGBRAI 2010 is the special first-time screen viewing of an epic feature-length documentary – “A Million Spokes”.

Shot in July of 2009, “A Million Spokes” was filmed during the largest and oldest bicycle touring event in the world.  An annual bicycle ride, RAGBRAI, takes place in Iowa over seven days in July where thousands of bicyclists descend on the state to partake in an adventure that is singular in its ability to attract some of the most unique people you will ever encounter.  Prepare to explore Iowa first-hand with the riders of RAGBRAI as we join them and meet the characters that we follow in “A Million Spokes.”

This viewing is a fantastic opportunity to meet the film’s director, producers, and many characters from “A Million Spokes” (not to mention the chance to meet the surprise guests!).

Tickets are available online or at the Riviera 4 Theater (714 4th St • Sioux City, IA 51101).

Besides being among the first to see the film and meet the director, your $25 ticket will also score you a free Medium bag of popcorn, a free Medium drink, and entry into a Raffle!

If the viewing on the 23rd doesn’t work into your schedule but you’re still up for seeing “A Million Spokes” then fear not! For the director of the film is providing additional screenings that will be open to the public on July 23rd and 24th, 2010.

Also, there’s a couple of interesting sponsorship opportunities at this event for businesses that want to get noticed. If you’re interested, these opportunities provide everything a business could want: from Company name and brands on all media and at the opening of the screening to VIP Movie passes. There are several packages available to tailor to your business’s needs.
